Maximising Value with End-of-Life IT Reuse and Recycling

We all know the ultimate goal: zero waste to landfill. But how do we reach that goal? When it comes to end-of-life IT at least DSA Connect (DSAC) has the answer. Under the direction of Tracey Hyde, Managing Director of DSAC, we have meticulously devised strategies for optimising the resale potential of redundant IT assets and the most efficient streams for component recovery.

Upon collection of customers’ redundant IT equipment, DSAC prioritises efforts to reintegrate items into the resale market whenever feasible. This approach offers multifaceted advantages, including cost savings, environmental sustainability, data security, and support for various organisations.

Prior to remarketing IT assets, DSAC employs rigorous data eradication and destruction procedures, accompanied by full certification, to safeguard sensitive information. We use Blancco Drive Eraser Software to securely erase data from various storage devices, degaussing for total data destruction from hard drives and data tapes, and granulating which physical destroys Solid Sate Drives and Hard Drives to 6mm particles. Once the data has been dealt with, the items are de-branded and readied for re-sale. Leveraging extensive trade networks, DSAC identifies suitable avenues for re-selling refurbished equipment, and in many cases providing customers with revenue shares from sales.

In instances where resale of entire items is impractical due to obsolescence or irreparable damage, DSAC undertakes dismantling processes to recover valuable components. This practice not only reduces electronic waste destined for landfill but also contributes to sustainability initiatives by reducing the demand for raw materials and energy required for manufacturing new components. By reusing the recovered components, valuable resources like metals, plastics, and rare earth elements are conserved, reducing the need for extraction and processing of these materials.

The careful breakdown of components is essential, but equally important is the recording and reporting process. DSAC provides customers with access to a secure client portal, allowing them to view the detailed breakdown of their items. As mentioned, in instances where the items have been deemed non-saleable, they will be broken down into the various components and recorded as such. As you can see below every gram is accounted for.

In our pursuit of achieving zero waste to landfill, DSAC remains at the forefront of end-of-life IT management. According to Tracey Hyde, MD, DSA Connect:

“In the realm of IT, reusing equipment and recovering components is not only economical, it is a testament to sustainability – turning yesterday’s solutions into today’s assets”

Our commitment extends to transparent reporting, so that customers can realise the full ESG potential their redundant IT can have. At DSAC, every gram counts, as we continue our mission to minimise waste and champion responsible IT asset management.
