Tech skills for change: A new path for prisoners

At DSA Connect, we believe true impact is made when people, purpose, and partnership come together. One of the most meaningful examples of this in action is our pioneering prison workshop programme across various HMP Prisons – HMP Highpoint, The Mount and Chelmsford – an initiative that’s not only equipping residents with practical tech skills but also reshaping futures.

A partnership for change

In collaboration with various HMP Prisons, we’ve built a programme that combines accredited skills training with hands-on work experience. The goal? To create a clear, supported pathway to employment for prison residents upon release. This isn’t just about ticking boxes – it’s about giving people real tools, confidence, and opportunities to rebuild their lives.

Real skills for real jobs

Inside the workshop, residents work on non-data-bearing IT equipment, learning key processes including:

They also gain experience with specialist diagnostic software and are trained to support the creation of ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) reports – critical documentation that’s increasingly important to our clients and partners.

These skills aren’t just practical; they’re highly transferable and in demand in today’s job market.

Sustainability with purpose

This programme isn’t just about rehabilitation – it’s about regeneration. In line with DSA Connect’s mission to champion the circular economy, the workshop focuses on reducing e-waste by giving materials and equipment a second life. Residents learn how to extract value from what others might discard – a lesson in both sustainability and personal growth.

By merging environmental responsibility with social rehabilitation, the programme delivers impact on multiple fronts: less waste, more skills, stronger communities.

Recognised and growing

The success of the workshops have already caught the attention of major corporations and organisations. With the support of our partners, we’re expanding the initiative to reach even more people, amplify the impact, and continue to challenge traditional views on both IT disposal and prisoner rehabilitation.

Looking ahead

At DSA Connect, we believe in second chances. Our Connexion programme supports prison leavers by linking them to job opportunities, hosting employment days, and arranging interviews.

By partnering with DSA Connect, organisations can embrace Green IT practices that align with their ESG goals while ensuring complete data security. As businesses face increasing scrutiny over their environmental impact, adopting a secure and sustainable IT disposal strategy is no longer optional; it is essential.Contact Hannah, our ESG & Sustainability Relationship Manager, at h.foggo@dsa-connect.co.uk to learn more about our sustainable IT disposal solutions. Let’s work together to build a greener, more secure future.
